10 psychology facts that'll (NOT) blow your mind away

Gambar
Considering this is the era of fact sharing and how people like 'quick bites' of information, I thought I'll compile some of the psychology facts that are almost never talked about. These are, well, not facts. These are robust research findings that are close to being facts. Truth be told, it's hard to call research a 'fact' in science. Because the evidence just keeps growing and it keeps changing the shape of information. More research adds a context. It adds limitations and generalizations. The line between solid evidence & facts is blurry. Nay, we don't really know where to draw it. Call me a skeptic. Scientific information has to be understood in a certain way. Perhaps I'll write on that someday, or you could just ask me in the comments section:) For all practical purposes, the contents of this article are research insights . We will use the term 'fact' loosely but in a more serious sense than most of the random, wrong, and unfalsifiable ...

Memory Models in Psychology - understanding human memory

Gambar
Memory is perhaps the most alluring topic of research in psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Through decades of trivial and breakthrough research insights, we know a little bit about memory. In fact, some of the aspects of memory have become common knowledge. You'll see people say 'my short term memory is bad but long term memory is good'. People know two types of memory, and that is good. Some are even aware of the types of content they remember well (facts, names, places, directions, etc.) The self-reflective nature of one's own memories produces intuitive insight. ... But there is the labyrinth of research that is confusing and yet solid in certain contexts. We know a lot, and we do not know a lot. In this article, we will look at what the research says about our memory. Also, try to reflect upon your own memories using these models. Should be fun! There are two ways we can look at memory. How the biology in the brain accommodates and represents memory (...

11 Psychological hacks using fonts

Gambar
Designers swear by the importance of fonts. They often see what most people overlook. At the superficial level, it could feel like fonts are about the beauty of the written word. But, as designers say, 'It reflects the character of writers and their written word. It is deeper than looks and can make or break a word.' In this short post, I'll summarize the research insights on typography from the brain sciences. Specifically, I've summarized the effect of typography on perception and memory. If you are hoping to find what psychological sciences say about fonts, you've come to the right place. Incoming research insights. Note: This is almost like a review of Literature. I've cited over 15 studies to draw insights. Ugly is not bad if it is useful Use Psychology to choose your fonts What is typography? Typography is the collective features that make up the style of printed material. This includes: Font style (Sans-Serif, Serif, Monospace, etc.) Font size Letter spa...

Why is extrasensory perception and telekinesis not possible?

Gambar
I love science fiction. All kinds. The B-grade kind, the kind which has more budget for a famous actor than for a thorough script, the Sharknado kind, etc. In many of these science fiction movies, comics, and books, the idea of a brain that is capable of god-like things is a popular trope- Martian man, Prof. Xavier, the many characters from Heroes, Doctor Manhattan, Vision, Doctor Strange. Similarly, there are tonnes of stories of people who claim to move things with their mind, see the future, predict unknowable events, etc. Today, let us look at a specific category of brain powers seen in science fiction & these personal stories from people - The capacity to create causal effects using just the power of the mind. Science fiction is deliberate fiction, it is not a product of evolution, nor is it engineered in a material sense. So most things check out under the mask of fiction. What happens when we logically tackle these psychic/psionic/extrasensory powers in the realm of reality?...

The Kiki Bouba effect - research overview & explanation

Gambar
The Kiki-Bouba effect: Deep inside your brain, cross-modal correspondences make you human. Which shape do you think is 'KIKI' and which one do you think is 'BOUBA'? ... ..... ...... ....... What is your answer? .... ..... ...... ....... Do you think the left one is KIKI and the right one is Bouba? .. ... ... Yeah? Or do you think it was the other way round? No problem if you thought it was the other way round. But it is just striking that.... 95% of the people think the left jagged shape is KIKI and the right bulbous shape is BOUBA!! You just demonstrated cross-modal correspondence. Something in your brain thought the sound of Kiki matched the left shape and something in Bouba matched the other right shape. Today, I am going to dive deep into my favourite topic in psychology and neuroscience - The Kiki-Bouba effect. It is something that may always separate us from the robots. Perhaps it holds the key to making robots more human. We don't know to what extent this may...
